Introduction

A new training system for PPG

Our sport has seen rapid growth and technical development. The same cannot be said for student training, there has been little or no progress. In fact the standards worldwide appear to be dropping. One has to ask, why ?

Firstly, individual countries associations find it hard to agree on any fixed standards for paramotoring mainly because of a lack of understanding, competitiveness for new memberships or a reluctance to take on an extra responsibility.

Secondly, we all love the nature of paramotoring, it is freedom and individualism, unfortunately this produces a maverick approach to training which is likely to lead to heavy regulation in the future and most importantly insurance becomes near impossible.

Historically the BMAA had set the benchmark for Microlight training, which became a system adopted by many countries. It was therefore hoped that the BMAA would be the ideal vehicle to do the same for Paramotor training. However, recent events and announcements by the BMAA, now mean that they are no longer prepared to support it or issue further Instructor and/or students pilot ratings. This appears to be mainly a liability issue.

For some time now it has been the intention of the PPG Instructor community to work together towards a more integrated International system. It now appears to be the moment to put this into place.

Most of you who have attended BMAA Instructor courses or have been taught to fly under the system will be aware of the basic structure and philosophy behind it.

For PPG schools/Instructors to work professionally, have a secure future and produce insured pilot training we must have standardized training methods in place.

Until now there has been no mechanism to make this possible.

What is PPGio?

PPGio stands for - Powered ParaGliding International Instructors Organisation.

For some time now the PPGio team comprising Mike Campbell-Jones and a number of prominent instructors from various countries have been working together to put in place this system.

The diagram opposite outlines the basic structure of PPGio

It is a UK Limited company,

therefore devoid of politics

and able to make fast decisions, whilst operating internationally.

It is web based with a developing data base, allowing access online for

Schools, Instructors and pilots.

It is funded by the school memberships and numbered student packs, these include, a book written specifically for our training methods, a training log book and provisional licence card.

It provides important safety notices and relevant training updates

It promotes universally safe training methods, whilst setting the standards for comprehensive insurance and pilot ratings.

PPGio Team would like to take this opportunity to ask you, the Instructors/Pilots, for your comments on this new system.

There will be other speciality disciplines within the sport where further tuition for Instructors will be required ie, heavy trikes, tandem foot-launch and hill flying. Feedback from Instructors interested in working with PPGio on these specialities and number of other development areas including translation would be greatly appreciated.
